How to Diagnose CV Joints Failure and Repair Options

The CV joint in the cars are inspected during your annual inspection and is one of the most important functioning part of your car. If there is damage to the boot that protects the CV joint and Ranger Razor Axles, it is only a matter of time before dirt and contamination attract enter the boot and the CV joint becomes damaged as it dries out as the lubrication provided by the boot grease is insufficient.I've heard people say to replace the CV half shaft and others say CV joint. What's the difference? There are couple of options depending on the severity of the damage to the outer CV joint. The CV half shaft has the outer CV joint on one side and the inner CV joint on the other side which attaches to your transmission system. The inner joint rarely fails in comparison to the outer. Therefore most of the repairs are done for the outter CV joint and boot, without having to replace the entire CV shaft which leave you about $300 dollars poor for a original factory part.

What are my options for repair if I have symptoms of CV joint damage?

You have the option of replacing the entire CV axle half shaft or repair the boot along with the outter CV joint if necessary.. Outter CV joint and kit costs about hundred of dollars few of companies like American CV Store offers and involved the same procedure as when changing the CV boot alone as the joint has to be detached in both cases. If there is only a CV boot damage with no signs of failure, replace only the CV boot which will only cost $20 for the kit.

Checking CV joint failure

Get in your car and pull down both windows. As you make turns listen for loud clicking sounds from either side which will indicate a failing CV joint.

So what are the repercussions of driving with a failed CV joint?

When the CV joint fails, it will only be a matter of time before the ball joints break loose and the CV shaft will fall loose, resulting in the wheels failing to move. But why take a chance at being stranded in the middle of the highway when you can have it fixed in no time.

Used Trailers - A Buyers' Guide

Trailer For Sale

What to look for before purchasing a new or used trailer.

Have you ever towed a vehicle or vacationed in a travel trailer? If not consider renting one for a weekend to determine if this is really for you. You will be making a large investment in a Travel Trailer so it would be a good idea to make sure this is really what you want.

Give some serious consideration to a pre-owned unit which will be substantially lower in price. You might consider Airstream known for its silver color and unique design, Jayco for its light weight and Dutchman for a reasonable price.

You need to know what your tow weight limit is. This information can be found in your vehicle information manual. It wouldn't hurt to run this by your mechanic or car dealership as well. Make sure you have the right towing set up, beginning with the bar and hitch, the auxiliary light package, brake controller unit if needed sometimes referred to as a trailer tow package.

Safety chains are crucial make sure they are intact. Most trailers are designed to hold two outside propane tanks. There are times when only one has been installed, ask for the second tank to be included in the sale, the power cord on some vehicles are separate make sure you have it too.

Check for the spare tire some units do not include one. If you have a flat tire on the open road you will be in dire need that spare tire. This is not going to the best time to discover that no spare can be found and you missed it at the time of the sale.

You need to determine which size trailer will best meet your needs. Give some thought as to how many people will be traveling with you. This will help determine how many people need sleeping accommodations.

A small unit easily sleeps six people. The kitchen area is very important if you plan to prepare most of your meals in the unit while traveling. If this is the case you can find a unit with a full stove equipped with an oven. A microwaves is usually standard in most units, some even include a built in coffee maker.

Storage is also of great importance so make sure the available storage is going go to meet your family's needs. There is usually a lot of storage space under the bed and seating areas inside the unit. More storage can be found in the under carriage. If this isn't sufficient there are special carriers that can be purchased. These attach to the back of the trailer and are easily installed with a standard trailer hitch and locked safely in place. You can carry ice chests, bikes, or any item that can be safely tied down and secured.

Most units usually have an antenna and the necessary connections for cable television, phone connections for internet access. Many RV's have satellite connections for both television and satellite so no matter where they are they can do everything on the road they do at home.

What You Should Know About Atv Cv Joints

What is a CV Joint? A CV joint is an abbreviation for a constant velocity joint. A CV joint is part of a drive shaft that attaches to the ATV's transmission at one end and the wheel at the other. They are designed to be able to bend in any direction while continuing to turn the wheels at a constant velocity. No matter what vehicle you drive, these joints make sure the inner workings or your ride are smooth and provide a calm driving experience. It is important to protect the CV joints at all times.

How Often do they Need to be Replaced?

Auto lovers, ATV lovers and UTV lovers alike, care about their machines and know the importance of replacing parts to maintain optimal performance. There are only a few instances where a CV joint would need to be replaced. In most cases, through normal wear and tear they simply get old and lose their function.A total breakdown for an ATV CV joint is not common, so with some simple knowledge you will have the ability to recognize when there is a problem and have enough time to replace it while your vehicle is still running.

How Do I Know if it Has Failed?

Two things that are important to remember: one is bad grease and another is loss of lubrication. These are both indications that your joint is failing. When you are driving and move into a turn and you hear a clicking sound, it most likely means your CV joint is worn out. The way to further confirm this is to put your car in reverse and drive backwards in a circle. If the sound seems louder as you do this, it means you will need to replace the damaged CV joint as soon as possible.

How do I Replace it?

It's more cost effective to replace the entire deteriorating axel assembly than just replacing the CV joint.

ATVs most commonly come with a fully equipped axle assembly, this includes the CV joints and CV boots. The boots encase the ATV CV joint, protecting it from outside debris and are vital for the entire assembly to function properly. The axle assembly and the CV boots can also get damaged by road debris and other contaminants such as mud, which builds up in the undercarriage of the ATV. Proper care must be taken in order to avoid such problems.
